Front and Back View Gesture Drawing

Charcoal on paper front and back view gesture drawing of two figures. First figure is facing the viewer with arms tight on her body and across stomach. The legs are slightly crisscrossed. The second figure is pictured from the back. The arms are crossed on her torso, the legs are straight with more weight on left leg. The drawing is rather loose, but the figures are well indicated.

I like this front and back view gesture drawing! The figures have volume; there’s a good flow of light and shadow. Even composition is interesting. I always try to balance figures on the page, but balance doesn’t always mean equality. I like how these two figures are on different levels. This “off-balance” creates a relationship between these two figures. To improve it, more work can be done around the torso and arms, but overall it’s a good gesture reference. I’m focusing on geometric abstract series right now, but at some point I want to do a figure painting series. These would definitely make that.
