Eastern Merchant Portrait

Charcoal drawing on paper of an eastern merchant portrait. Profile head of a male person looking to the left. He has a triangular short beard and a crescent moon earring. He's wearing a folded cloth head covering with a string around his head.

Every now and then, I attend portrait drawing sessions. Occasionally, models there wear costumes and create mysterious and interesting characters. This person had eastern motifs with flowy fabrics and sparkles throughout the costume, and for some reason I channeled this eastern merchant portrait.

This portrait is tiny, 6 by 9 inches. I actually had a test pack of the Fabriano Tiepolo paper, and I fell in love with it after drawing this portrait. The paper has very fine texture, so its soft, but at the same time rough enough to allow very fine details. I used willow and Conte charcoal and eraser to create all values.
